Nuts and seeds make paleo hot cereal filling.

The paleo diet tries to mimic how humans ate during the Paleolithic era. On the paleo diet, meats, fish, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and some fats are OK, but grains, sugars, dairy and most processed foods are out. The absence of grains eliminates conventional hot cereal options such as oatmeal, wheat bran, porridge and bulgur. By combining nuts, seeds, fruits and spices, you can make some delicious paleo meals to replace your usual hot cereal.
Banana, Cinnamon and Walnut
Pureed banana makes paleo hot cereals creamy, filling and mildly sweet. Combining pureed banana with ground cinnamon, chopped walnuts and a splash of water creates a thick cereal with a consistency like chunkier oatmeal. The walnuts will soften when simmered for a few minutes on the stove or in the microwave. Rather than adding more water should the cereal begin to thicken too much when you heat it, add more pureed banana and lower the heat.
Berry, Flax and Chia
Flax and chia seeds will congeal when you mix them with hot water, creating a consistency similar to farina, a smooth porridge. If you don't add enough water, the flax and chia will create an unappetizing, gelatinous puck. Avoid this by watching the seeds carefully as they heat. Stir in more water if the mixture begins to thicken beyond a pourable consistency. Cooking on the stovetop is more likely to produce palatable results than cooking in the microwave for this dish. Adding mashed berries gives the otherwise bland cereal a splash of flavor and color. Use as many berries as you like to make the flavor palatable.
Apple, Almond and Coconut
Chopped apples, ground almond and flaked coconut create a dish similar to apple oatmeal when cooked with water until the coconut hydrates. The coconut flakes create the oat-like consistency, the ground almonds add the creamy element and the apple chunks make the hot cereal sweeter. Microwaving and stovetop heating should produce comparable results. If the cereal's too watery after heating, stir in more ground almonds or add a spoonful of ground flaxseed. Nutmeg or cinnamon will spice the cereal, creating an apple pie-like flavor. Using almond milk instead of water will help tie the flavor of your cereal together.
Paleo hot cereals use a combination of seeds, ground or chopped nuts, mashed, pureed or chopped fruit, water or almond milk; and extra ingredients such as flaked coconut or carob chips. You don't need to follow a recipe or even a set list of ingredients. In fact, that's one of the benefits of paleo cooking: recipes are rarely necessary. Search your pantry or refrigerator for cereal ingredients and simmer three or four of them to make your meal. For thicker cereal, you can stir in a raw beaten egg while the ingredients simmer on the stovetop. As the egg cooks, it will thicken the cereal, and the additional protein will help make your cereal more filling.
